What inspectors found, January 2024
Mill View rated Good overall, but inspectors found that safety requires improvement because staffing and some safety checks were not always reliable.
This was an unannounced inspection on 29 November and 6 December 2023. Inspectors spoke with people, relatives and staff. They reviewed care plans, medicines records, complaints and quality checks.
The home was rated Good overall. Responsive and well-led were rated Good. Safe was rated Requires Improvement. On the first day, staffing pressures meant some people waited for support, including help to go outside and help with a meal. Staffing improved on the second day.
Inspectors also found that hot water checks had not been completed since July 2023. Some infection control arrangements needed improvement, and two bath hoists were faulty. These issues were acted on during or after the inspection. The previous overall rating was Outstanding in 2018, so the overall rating has fallen to Good.
Kind, patient staff
Inspectors saw calm, sensitive interactions. Staff supported people patiently when they needed help to move or after a fall.

Personalised choices
People were involved in decisions about their routines, care, food and clothing. Care plans gave detailed guidance about individual needs.
“People's care was personalised as staff promoted choice and control.” from the report
Medicines managed safely

“Medicines were managed safely and people received these as prescribed.” from the report
Open management
Managers were open with inspectors and acted quickly on issues found. Quality checks identified areas for improvement.
“The management team were responsive to our feedback and eager to improve the service.” from the report
Complaints handled
People and relatives felt able to raise concerns. The two complaints recorded in 2023 showed appropriate action and responses.
“Both complaints demonstrated appropriate action was taken in response to the issues raised and a response was provided.” from the report
Staffing pressures
seriousOn the first inspection day, some people did not receive support promptly. One person waited to go outside and another missed help with a meal. Staffing improved on the second day.
“There were not always enough staff to consistently meet people's needs.” from the report
Missed hot water checks
needs fixingHot water temperatures had not been checked since July 2023. Checks were completed immediately after inspectors identified the gap, and there was no evidence of harm.

needs fixingTwo bath hoists were out of use because of faults. Repairs were completed following the inspection.

Risk of distress
seriousOne person entered other people's bedrooms without staff knowing where they were. This distressed two people in their bedrooms.

Infection control gaps
needs fixingSome sluice items were not stored correctly and two communal bathroom soap gel dispensers were empty on the first day. These issues were corrected by the second day.

Or stay at home with a private carer
Many people who look at care homes end up staying at home with a carer who comes in for a few hours a day, or lives in. PrimeCarers introduces you to self-employed carers you choose yourself: interviewed, ID and DBS checked, from about £20 an hour or £1,120 a week live-in.
