CQC rating

Rated Requires improvement

2,265 services in England are currently rated Requires improvement: inspectors found the service was not performing as well as it should and told it what to change.

The service was told what to put right. The report matters here: some Requires improvement ratings are about records and management, others are about people being at risk.

Reading a rating

What Requires improvement means for your family

Requires improvement covers a wide range. At one end, a home with kind staff whose paperwork was not kept up. At the other, a service where risks to people were not managed and inspectors found a breach of the regulations.

The overall rating usually follows the Safe and Well-led questions, so those are the ones to read. Our explanation on each page shows all five question ratings and what inspectors said about each, and lists any breaches.

A Requires improvement rating that is two or three years old under a manager who has since left tells you little. A recent one is worth a direct conversation with the manager about what has changed.

Or hire a private carer instead

PrimeCarers introduces you to self-employed carers near you. You read their profiles, talk to them and choose who comes into your home. Interviewed, ID and DBS checked, from about £20 an hour, with no agency in between.
