What inspectors found, January 2024
Rated Good; Thurn Court provided safe, kind care, but records of some welfare checks were not always completed promptly.
Inspectors made an unannounced focused inspection over two days. They spoke with people, relatives and staff, and reviewed care, medicine, recruitment and management records.
The home was rated Good for Safe and Well-led. Inspectors found safeguarding systems, medicines, staffing, recruitment, equipment and infection control were generally managed safely.
People and relatives described a friendly and inclusive home. Inspectors saw staff providing empathetic care and supporting people's choices. The main shortfall was that records did not always show promptly when some two-hourly welfare checks had taken place.
This inspection only looked closely at Safe and Well-led. The overall Good rating used the previous ratings for the other areas, from the inspection published in August 2018.
Safe medicines
Medicines were received, stored, given and disposed of safely. Staff had training and competence checks for different ways of giving medicines.
“People were supported with their medicines in a safe and timely way.” from the report
Kind, inclusive care
People and relatives spoke positively about the atmosphere and care. Inspectors saw staff showing empathy and supporting people's independence and everyday choices.
“Staff have a good rapport with people, and demonstrated empathy and care in their care interactions.” from the report
Good oversight
The management team used audits, incident reviews and feedback to monitor quality and encourage improvement. Staff were supported through supervision, observed practice and training.
“The outcome of audits and reviews of incidents were shared with staff collectively and individually through e-mail, internal meetings, supervision and the provider's electronic monitoring system.” from the report
Welfare checks not always recorded promptly
needs fixingStaff said two-hourly checks were carried out when needed, but records were sometimes completed later and did not always include the time of the check. The home had identified this as an area for improvement, especially because most falls happened at night.
“staff confirmed 2 hourly welfare checks were carried out as when required, however they would sometimes complete care records later in the day” from the report

Or stay at home with a private carer
Many people who look at care homes end up staying at home with a carer who comes in for a few hours a day, or lives in. PrimeCarers introduces you to self-employed carers you choose yourself: interviewed, ID and DBS checked, from about £20 an hour or £1,120 a week live-in.
