Beeches Care Home
25 Park Road, Coppull, Chorley, PR7 5AH
Rated Good: inspectors found the service performing well and meeting their expectations.
What inspectors found, December 2023
Beeches Care Home is rated Inadequate and in special measures; inspectors found serious risks around safety, staffing, medicines and management.
This was an unannounced inspection on 28 September and 4 October 2023. Inspectors spoke with people, relatives, staff and other professionals. They observed care, checked medicines, reviewed care and recruitment records, and inspected the building, equipment and cleanliness.
Inspectors found serious safety problems. Fire safety checks and fire doors were not properly managed. Staffing was not always sufficient, recruitment checks were incomplete, medicines were not managed safely, and infection control and cleanliness were poor. The home did not reliably learn from accidents, incidents or safeguarding concerns.
Care records were detailed but sometimes inconsistent, and people did not always receive the care recorded as needed. Inspectors also found limited activities, poor involvement of people and relatives in decisions, and weak systems for complaints and quality monitoring. Staff were generally kind and worked well as a team, but often did not have enough time to provide personal care and conversation.
The overall rating fell from Good at the previous inspection to Inadequate. Effective, Caring and Responsive were rated Requires Improvement. Safe and Well-led were rated Inadequate. The home was placed in special measures, meaning CQC will keep it under review and expects to re-inspect within six months unless it proposes to cancel the provider's registration.
Kind interactions
Inspectors saw staff treating people with kindness, dignity and respect. People generally spoke positively about staff.
“We observed staff to be kind and caring.” from the report
Healthcare support
People were supported to access healthcare when needed. Information from professionals was shared with staff and recorded.
“People were supported to access healthcare services as and when this was required.” from the report
Teamwork
Staff generally liked working at the home and described good teamwork. Staff also said they could raise concerns with the manager.
“Staff told us they generally liked working at the home and everyone worked well as a team.” from the report
Personalised bedrooms
Inspectors saw that people had bedrooms personalised with their own belongings.
“During our visit, we observed people had personalised bedrooms with their own belongings.” from the report
Fire safety
seriousFire doors raised concerns, safety checks were not completed consistently and there were no trained fire marshals at the time of inspection. Staff were not all trained to evacuate people safely.
“Issues relating to ineffective fire doors were raised by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in December 2022, but action had not been taken to rectify this.” from the report
Staffing levels
seriousPeople and staff reported that there were not always enough staff. Missed care tasks suggested that staffing levels affected safety and the support people received.
“There was a failure to ensure sufficient numbers of staff were deployed to meet people's needs.” from the report
Medicines
seriousMedicine competence checks, storage, temperature monitoring, opening dates and records for variable doses were not managed reliably. CQC found a breach, although it found no evidence that people had been harmed by these issues.
“There was a failure to ensure appropriate systems and processes were in place for managing medications.” from the report
Care and hydration
seriousPeople did not always receive the care recorded in their plans. Inspectors found missed care tasks and inadequate fluid intake, creating a risk of dehydration.
“People were not protected from the risk of dehydration.” from the report
Activities and social contact
seriousThere was little evidence of regular, meaningful activity. Staffing pressures meant people, particularly those cared for in bed, had limited opportunities for company and social interaction.
“There was a failure to ensure personalised care and support which reflected people's emotional and social needs.” from the report
Weak oversight
seriousAudits and other checks did not identify or resolve important problems. The provider did not use feedback, records and monitoring systems effectively to improve care.
“Systems and processes had not been established to effectively assess, monitor and improve the quality and safety of services.” from the report

Or stay at home with a private carer
Many people who look at care homes end up staying at home with a carer who comes in for a few hours a day, or lives in. PrimeCarers introduces you to self-employed carers you choose yourself: interviewed, ID and DBS checked, from about £20 an hour or £1,120 a week live-in.
