Wentworth Grange
Nursing Home, Riding Mill, NE44 6DZ
Rated Good: inspectors found the service performing well and meeting their expectations.
What inspectors found, December 2023
Rated Requires Improvement; inspectors found kind, knowledgeable care but weaknesses in medicines records and oversight.
This was an unannounced, focused inspection on 23 October 2023. Inspectors looked at Safe and Well-led. They spoke with people, relatives, staff and external professionals, observed care, and checked care, medicines and management records.
The home was not always safe. Medicines guidance and records were inconsistent. Audits and investigations did not reliably identify problems or show lessons learned. Some information was also not shared promptly with CQC and other agencies.
There were positive findings. People felt safe and supported. Staff understood people's risks and needs, care plans were detailed, the environment was clean, and staff were trained and checked as competent. However, the weaknesses in oversight led to a breach of Regulation 17 and an overall rating of Requires Improvement.
Detailed care planning
Care plans included useful information about people's needs and risks. Staff understood how to reduce those risks.
“Risk assessments were contained within people' care planning documentation and were detailed.” from the report
Trained staff
Staff received training and supervision, and their competence was checked regularly. They showed good knowledge of people's medicines and needs.

Medicines records and guidance
needs fixingGuidance for medicines given when needed was not always person-centred. Records for creams and patches were inconsistent or missing on some occasions.
“Guidance to support staff in the safe administration of when required medicines needed to be more person-centred.” from the report
Weak oversight
seriousMedicines and care plan audits were irregular or ineffective. They did not identify the problems found during the inspection.
“Audits of medicines were irregular and had not picked up on the areas we identified.” from the report
Incident investigations
seriousInternal investigations did not always show clear lessons or follow-up actions. This meant the home could not demonstrate that repeat problems would be avoided.
“The provider did not always conduct sufficiently rigorous internal investigations following incidents; lessons learned and follow up actions were not always apparent.” from the report
Delayed information sharing
needs fixingInformation and records were not always shared promptly with CQC and other relevant agencies. The report said the culture was not always open.
“The provider did not always share information promptly when requested, with CQC and other relevant agencies.” from the report
Staffing concerns raised
needs fixingSome people and external professionals felt there were times when staff were stretched in communal areas. Inspectors did not see staff struggling during the visit, but the provider agreed to review how staffing levels were calculated.
“People felt there were times when there were too few staff in communal areas.” from the report

Or stay at home with a private carer
Many people who look at care homes end up staying at home with a carer who comes in for a few hours a day, or lives in. PrimeCarers introduces you to self-employed carers you choose yourself: interviewed, ID and DBS checked, from about £20 an hour or £1,120 a week live-in.
