What inspectors found, February 2024
Rated Good; inspectors found people were safe and the home was well-led, but medicine records were not always complete.
This was an unannounced inspection prompted partly by a safeguarding concern. Inspectors found no evidence that people were at risk of harm from that concern. They visited on 17 January 2024, spoke with relatives and staff, observed people, and reviewed care and management records.
The home was rated Good for Safe and Well-led. Inspectors found suitable risk plans, enough staff, safe recruitment, trained staff for medicines, and infection control procedures. The management team used checks and audits to identify concerns and make improvements.
The time that some as-required medicines were given was not always recorded. The provider took immediate action by introducing a new chart. The overall rating remained Good, the same as at the previous inspection.
Enough staff
Inspectors found there were enough staff to provide the care people needed at the right time. Relatives did not raise concerns about staffing levels.
“There were enough staff available to support people.” from the report
Individual risk planning
Risk assessments and care plans were based on people's individual needs. Staff followed them, including when supporting people in the community.
“Individual risks to people were assessed, monitored and reviewed.” from the report
Safeguarding awareness
Staff had safeguarding training and understood what to do if they suspected abuse. Inspectors found the relevant procedures were followed when needed.
“Staff had received training and understood when people may be at risk of abuse.” from the report
Learning from incidents
The registered manager showed that changes had been made after a previous safeguarding alert, and these changes were shared with staff.
“The registered manager was able to demonstrate lessons had been learnt when things went wrong.” from the report
Management checks
The home carried out checks on medicines, care and infection control. Inspectors found these audits were effective in identifying concerns.
“Quality checks and audits were completed in the service and these were effective in identifying concerns.” from the report
Medicine recording
needs fixingThe exact time that some as-required medicines were given was not always recorded. The provider took immediate action by introducing a new chart.
“The time people received these was not always documented.” from the report
- 01Has the new chart for recording as-required medicines been introduced, and is it now being completed every time?
- 02How do you check that medicine records show the exact time each as-required medicine was given?
- 03What changes were made after the safeguarding alert, and how do you check that staff continue to follow them?
- 04How do you make sure staffing levels remain sufficient for the four people using the care home service and the three people using supported living?
- 05How are people and their families involved when care plans or risk assessments are reviewed?
This was an unannounced focused inspection of Safe and Well-led; the report did not give separate ratings or detailed findings for Effective, Caring or Responsive, and the supported living premises themselves were not inspected. This explanation was written from the published report of 3 February 2024 by an AI system and checked against the report text: every quoted line appears in the report. Or stay at home with a private carer
Many people who look at care homes end up staying at home with a carer who comes in for a few hours a day, or lives in. PrimeCarers introduces you to self-employed carers you choose yourself: interviewed, ID and DBS checked, from about £20 an hour or £1,120 a week live-in.
