The latest report, explained

What inspectors found, December 2023

Dudbrook Hall rated Good; inspectors found safe, caring support and effective management, but asked for improvements to recruitment checks and risk assessments.

This was an unannounced, focused inspection on 22 November 2023. Three inspectors spoke with people living there, relatives, staff and health professionals. They also checked care, medicines, recruitment and management records.

The home was rated Good overall. Safe and well-led were both rated Good. Inspectors found enough trained staff, safe medicines procedures, good infection control and systems for reporting concerns and learning from incidents.

There were some areas to improve. A few recruitment records were incomplete, one previous-employer DBS check did not have a risk assessment at the time, and some risk assessments had not been updated after changes such as a fall. The provider acted on the recruitment issue during the inspection and was given recommendations.

What inspectors praised
  • Enough suitable staff

Inspectors found enough staff and said their numbers and skills matched people's needs. Staff had an induction and shadowing before working independently.

There are a lot of staff here and they all know exactly what they are doing.from the report
  • Medicines managed safely

People received medicines as prescribed. Staff were trained and assessed before supporting people, and medicines were securely stored and regularly audited.

People were given their medicines safely and as prescribed, and it was recorded on their medicine administration record.from the report
  • Good management oversight

Managers used audits, monthly reports, staff meetings and feedback to monitor the service and identify improvements.

There was an effective quality audit system in place which included a monthly report to analyse themes or trends.from the report
  • Open visiting

Relatives were able to visit without restrictions. The report says relatives found the home welcoming and easy to contact.

There are absolutely no restrictions in place. We can visit whenever we want to.from the report
What inspectors were concerned about
  • Recruitment records

    needs fixing

Some staff files did not contain proof of address. One DBS check had come from a previous employer without a risk assessment in place at the time. The manager acted during the inspection, but the provider was asked to improve its recruitment checks.

However, the DBS checks seen on 1 staff file had been issued by a previous employer and the registered manager had not put a risk assessment in place to ensure the member of staff was safe to work.from the report
  • Risk assessments not always updated

    needs fixing

Some risk assessments had not been reviewed after people's needs changed. Inspectors gave the example of a person who had fallen and did not yet have an updated assessment.

However, some of the risk assessments had not been updated. For example, a person who had recently had a fall did not have an updated risk assessment.from the report
Questions to ask them, based on this report
  1. 01How do you make sure a person's risk assessment is updated promptly after a fall or other change in their needs?
  2. 02What checks are now completed and recorded before every new member of staff starts work?
  3. 03How do you manage DBS checks carried out by a previous employer, and when is a risk assessment required?
  4. 04How often are medicines records and audits checked, and what happens if an error is found?
  5. 05How will you keep relatives informed when a person's health or care needs change?
